Riding in the wind
« on: May 03, 2010, 12:33:50 PM »
I was looking for some advice on Riding in severe wind conditions.  That is the only time, when I ride, that I have concerns.  Does anyone have some good advice on riding in heavy winds.  Safety tips, etc.?

I don't mind the rain, cold or heat, but the wind does bother me.  Never quite able to relax in heavy wind conditions.

No advice, but I certainly agree with your concerns.  Heavy wind and sudden gusts :o make for a far from enjoyable ride.  I also wonder if the higher profile bikes catch more of the cross winds than a bike without fairing, etc.

Good question!

Hi Allen;
You are so right. The Raider cuts right through the wind and be sides wind can catch an armchair but can't catch a rocket. Maybe it wasn't the wind as much as all of us Raider Riders Vortex stirring up the wind currents. Just kidding it was kicking my but also on the way back on Saturday. All you can do is lay into the wind and watch out for the wind shear or when the wind stops suddenly. Be carefull friends and keep the chrome side up.

Head winds are not really a problem but side winds are, my advice is to slow down, when encountering large freeway vehicles stay as far to the right or left as you can and get around them quickly instead of staying in their backwash and wind. It is better to have the consistency your own wind vs others. If you feel unsafe at any time pull over. The important thing is to arrive safely.  I wear a full face helmet and it is very nice on windy days as you can just shut the wind out buy lowering the face mask. Keeps sand and noise out which helps to concentrate
