problems with changing out factory pipes

My wife wants a little more rumble in her bike so I thought I could just remove the fatory muffler and put on a cobra slipon for about $200. My parts guy tells me changing the factory exhaust will cause the bike to run poorly if I don,t also add a fuel mangment system. I know alot of you have done modifications to your exhaust have you had any problems?

I know Chappy has said he did.

She has a 2010 vstar 950 with fuel injuection.

Bear,

It all depends on which pipe you switch to and the factory recommendations of that pipe manufacturer.  Sometimes the computer on board her bike may compensate for a not too drastic of a change.  Your other alternative is to check with one of our dealers and ask them their advice.  Or check with Yamaha.  Sorry for nothing specific, but there are so many variables involved.

Many folks change out the pipes or put a slip on muffler and a air cleaner kit on their 1300's without a fuel processor change, the 950 should not be all that different.  There is a fair amount of ability in the stock system to accomodate the change.  Try it and see, if the backfire is unmanageable, a fuel processor may be the ticket.

Sorry for the late reply but I just joined and saw this thread.  Ignore it if you've already done the mod.

This issue has been discussed to the extreme on another forum I belong to.  On the 950 it's been about 50/50 on whether the FMS is needed.  The majority oppinion there is that the FMS is not needed if you just change exhaust (i.e. Cobra Slip-on) but if you also modify the air intake you will need to add an FMS to get more fuel into the mixture.

On my 950 I have all three: Cobra Slip-on, FMS and K&N air-filter.

I should have looked at your set up on Sunday. My wife would like very much to see and hear what the slip on sounds like.

It is not to late to go on our weekend outing we have rooms.

Also I enjoyed looking at the pow wow photos tell Anne she did a good job.

Bear I'd love to go but have other plans for the weekend.  There still time left in the riding season, I'm sure we can fiond a time to get together before the snow flies.

If any one is looking into exhaust systems. I do have a certificate for $100.00 off on SAMSON exhaust systems.
 All I know about them is that they do not make pipes for my bike. Oh well, I guess I will stick with stock for a little longer.

Pappa I contacted Cobra and they said that said that putting a slip on on the 950 makes it run to lean and that 90% of the time you need a fms to have the bike run right. Alas no easy cheep answers.

Alan of course they would say that they're trying to sell you and FMS dude. 

Like I said my experience and conversations with other 950 owners who have installed Cobra slip-ons is the numbers are more like 50/50 need an FMS.  I doubt very seriously if you'd need one unless you did an air intake mod also.  You have to open both ends (exhaust and intake) to make the engine run any leaner.

I just got home with the new Vance and Hines pipes on the Stryker it is no longer the quitest bike in my garage.
