We left Wed evening and stayed in Sioux Falls. We had a great ride to Lead on Thursday.
Weather was amazing on Fri and Sat. until storms started rolling in Sat. early eve. We were about 75 min. from the hotel and radar started showing a storm building up.
We hit the road and the skies got dark pretty quick but no rain. We are just into Hill City when there is major steam/fog on the road and a small amount of hail in the ditch. We get our rain gear on and venture ahead.
The rain starts and we're taking our time cruising along. Next thing we know, there is a ton of hail on the shoulder and in the ditch (see pic). I pulled over to let the cars go past. There is really no shoulder to safely park on and we had to keep going. The further down the road, the deeper the hail became. I swear - it was at least 5+ inches deep IN the road. We had to drive in the tire tracks of the cars ahead of us. We were lucky to be in the aftermath.
Made it back to the hotel in one piece. We woke up Sun and saw the storms rolling in again that morning. We decided to pack up and head towards home. We stayed ahead of those storms and just ended up riding home.
